The objective of Pente is to get 5 of your pieces in a row (horizontal, vertical, diagonal)
Game Play
Each player is randomly assigned a colour.
Black goes first and must place their stone in the centre.
After this players take turns to place a stone on any free square on the board.
Captures
Pieces can be captured when you surround a pair of your opponents stones.
In the example below, the two black pieces would be removed from play, as white has just surrounded them.
Once pieces are removed from play, the spaces they occupied are now free to retake
Winning and Scoring
The game is over when one player has 5 of their pieces in a row, or has captured 10 of their opponents pieces.
The scores are then calculated using:
- 5 points for 5 stones in a row
- 1 point per capture
- 1 point for each 4 consecutive stones still in play
The player that achieves the highest score wins
